GIS meets web3: Dash Cam Map-to-Earn. HIVEMAPPER

Hivemapper is a blockchain-based crowdsourced mapping network that rewards drivers for collecting roadway data with a dual-purpose dashcam and cryptocurrency mining device with GPS location capabilities. By attaching this device to your car, the imagery collected while you drive generates a native crypto token called HONEY that serves as ownership of the network. Users are also rewarded for providing annotations, georeferenced information, or other mapping services to the API. The idea is to populate a constantly refreshing maps interface that will rival Google Street View by giving passive income to motorists. It is being built on the popular layer-1 blockchain protocol Solana. This decentralized approach to building out geospatial products is a step towards fulfilling the values of an emerging web3 where privacy is preserved and data is no longer owned and controlled by giant centralized institutions. As a GIS enthusiast and web3 participant, I am excited to contribute to the map and be rewarded for it. Hivemapper will launch this summer in test markets and expand globally in the fall, shipping preordered dashcams to regions as they open for use.
